Dress in layers. Weather can be very fickle this time of year and can receive heavy snow fall. However, if the sun is out it can be comfortable and in the mid 40s. Make certain all of you have hats, gloves and water resistant coats. It's a good idea to wear long johns. Avoid wearing cotton because it vets very cold when it gets wet. I'm sure the wee one will want to explore the snow. Use boots with a tread. Bring extra dry clothes because your 3 year old will want to play in the snow and will probably get wet. It's beautiful! But you can only drive up a small fraction of the main road. They block the rest off for the winter.

Also consider a good chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

It might be too late. Due to its higher altitude, beginning of October or end of September will be the best time to see fall colors.

The Aspens haven't started changing, but it is still magnificent to see. Trail Ridge Road is still passable & the elk are rutting in September too.
